FITNESS AND CROSS-TRAINING

Our upstairs fitness facility has a wide range of machines, weights (various shapes and sizes), and apparatuses that will meet the needs of any individual who is committed to a consistent, appropriately guided program for tennis fitness. For strength and size we have free weights, weighted bars and dumbbells, benches (flat and incline), weighted/kettle balls, a Powertech Pullup/Dip apparatus, a Flex Leg Press machine, a Vectra 3850 Universal Gym and a free motion cross beam trainer.

Those who wish to increase endurance will find the Lifecycle and friction stationary upright bikes, the Precor recumbent bike, the two treadmills, and Lifestyle, an advanced motion trainer, a spinner, rower and Precor elliptical trainers more than adequate.

If one gets bored easily with these repetitive machines, the two TVs, hooked with cable programming, make the time go by just a little faster. Balance and agility can be improved using the Reebok Step-ups, jump ropes, step ladders, wobble board and, of course, the fabulous BOSU ball. Therapy for general strength, flexibility and range of motion, is facilitated by our numerous stretching straps and all purpose mats. Tension bands with different resistance are of great aid in building shoulder strength for post surgery therapy as well as maintenance and prevention of injury.

If structure is needed for a fitness program, the BTC has three exceptional trainers who can customize a program for individuals of all levels - Jo Baker, John Sullivan and Andrea Cohen. Here are the trainers with a brief bio and contact information.

Jo BAKER (phone: 510-816-1969)
Jo is certified as a Group Exercise Instructor and Personal Trainer through the American Council on Exercise and holds specific certifications in Older Adult Training, Mat Pilates, Reformer Pilates and Studio Cycling. Along with training BTC members, Jo serves as a Fitness Coordinator at UC Berkeley where she also teaches cycling, step, pilates and weight training. She has a masters from UC Berkeley, and is working on her Education Doctorate at Mills College.
John SULLIVAN (phone: 510-465-7420)
John is a graduate of UC Berkeley where he lettered in football 1980-84. John played professional football for the Green Bay Packers and the San Diego Chargers. He then worked as the Academic Coordinator/Assistant Director for Academic Services for Student-Athletes at UC Berkeley. In 1989, John turned his life’s hobby of health & fitness into a profession of Personal Fitness. Along with John’s many years of athletic training and personal health he holds a Fitness Certification by the American Council on Exercise. In addition, he possesses various other certifications which meets the diverse needs of the BTC’s membership. Also, John is currently employed by UC Berkeley as the Fitness Staff Coordinator.
Andrea COHEN (phone: 510-595-6823)
Andrea is a Certified personal trainer from Hayward Health & Fitness Institute where she worked for 8 years. She has a Kinesiology degree from SF State. Andrea has worked as a trainer and fitness instructor in several Bay Area gyms and worked in a physical therapy facility and has experience working with injured athletes.
Delency BAKER (phone: 510-703-0324)
Delency is a certified Personal Trainer through the National Academy of Sports Medicine. He currently works in four capacities at UC Berkeley: Group Exercise Instructor, Small Group Circuit Training Instructor, Wellness Coach, Personal Trainer. Delency has a specific certification in Wellness Coaching, utilizing both coaching and personal training at Team Tufunga Gym in Emeryville. He has worked with clients both new to fitness, as well those interested in sports-specific training.
