2008 Alta Bates Summit Celebrity Tennis Classic - September 20, 2008
The Alta Bates Summit Celebrity Tennis Classic went flawlessly once again on Saturday, September 20. ABS Foundation’s classic has raised over $3.6 million in proceeds over a 14 year period. The BTC in keeping with its charge to promote tennis and serve the community was once again host to this successful fund-raising event. Proceeds from this year’s Classic once again went to the Thunder Road (recovery program for alcohol, drug and nicotine abuse) and Youth Bridge (academic instruction in job-readiness and health related fields), both ABSMC programs created for at-risk youth in the East Bay.
While many local celebrities came out for the “tournament” to show support for the cause, the main celebrities this year were a Tennis Hall of Famer, Tracy Austin, and a sure to be one, Lindsay Davenport. This year, both Tracy and Lindsay were mic’ed up for the event that was emceed by local broadcaster and former NBA player, Jim Barnett. Austin and Davenport each teamed up with U.C. Bears players, Bojana Bobusic, Claire Ilcinkas, Cal Assistant Coach, Tyler Browne, and former BTC Junior and UC Davis standout, Greg Lee for 2 entertaining exhibitions out on Court 1. The purposeful volley exchanges between Austin and Browne were particularly entertaining. Tracy and Lindsay amused and enthralled the crowd with their glib on-court banter.
The 2008 Alta Bates Summit Celebrity Tennis Classic Steering Committee is comprised many BTC Members, Margo Garner, 2008 Chair, Geoff Hayes, Deanna Lee, Bev Goggio, Linda Peltz, Joan Maze Miles, Cindy Abel, Ellen Green, Tina Heldman, Lisa Hotchkiss, and Susan Raifman. The able planning of the Committee, the donations of local businesses, the hospitality of the BTC, the work of all volunteers (many from the BTC), and enthusiastic participation of local and national celebrities should be acknowledged for making this event an enduring success.
As previously stated the proceeds, as in past years went to Thunder Road Adolescent Drug and Alcohol Treatment Center (www.thunder-road.org) and Youth Bridge, both freestanding subsidiaries of the Alta Bates Summit Medical Center. These two entities target at-risk youth for rehabilitation of drug abuse and creation of job skills as well as providing academic instruction in job-readiness careers, mentoring, paid summer internships at the Center and emphasis on leadership development.
The Berkeley Tennis Club appreciates those who selflessly gave their time throughout the planning and realization of this event; members of the BTC were a large part of both the steering committee and the on-site volunteer team (headed by BTC Manager Geoff Hayes) that made this worthy benefit such a success.
